Neonatal Resuscitation Program

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an American Heart Association/American Academy of Pediatrics credentialed course, focusing on the initial assessment and management of the newborn. NRP is designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn. The causes, prevention, and management of mild to severe neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge

Course participants will learn a systematic approach to the initial assessment of the newborn and the corrective action that may need to be taken.  The following sections are included in the NRP Provider and Renewal courses:

1) Overview and Principles of Resuscitation
2) Initial Steps of Resuscitation
3) Use of a Resuscitation Bag and Mask
4) Chest Compressions
5) Endotracheal Intubation
6) Medications
7) Special Considerations

Following each powerpoint slide presentation, there will be a question and answer session facilitated by the instructor. The participant will then take a post-test over that particular section.  Where applicable, participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills in assessing and managing the newborn with a variety of problems. A final newborn "megacode" will validate the participant's ability to manage a distressed newborn.
